Find retrofit organisations and guidance

The National Retrofit Directory helps you find organisations working across UK housing retrofit and explore relevant guidance.

Search by asking a question in everyday language, or add your organisation so others can find you.

The directory is a project of INHABIT Hub, developed at the University of Surrey in collaboration with the National Retrofit Hub.

What is the National Retrofit Directory?

The directory is a public, searchable resource that brings together information about organisations involved in improving existing homes across the UK.

It helps people discover relevant expertise and identify organisations to work with. It also provides a way to explore retrofit guidance, including policy documents and government regulations.

The directory is continuing to develop. Adding your organisation helps build a fuller picture of the UK retrofit sector.

How do I search the directory?

The directory uses an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant. Type your question into the search box using everyday language.

For example, you can ask:

  • Which organisations work on retrofit in Bristol?
  • Is there an architect near Portsmouth?
  • What is PAS 2035?
  • What does retrofit mean?

You can use it to explore organisations relevant to your work or ask questions about housing retrofit.

What should I check before using the information?

The AI assistant’s answers can be incomplete or incorrect. Check important information against the original source before acting on it.

The organisations listed have not been assessed for quality by the directory team. Visit their websites and carry out your usual checks before appointing a provider or choosing a partner.

To report an error or suggest an improvement, email info@retrofit-directory.org.uk.

Who can add their organisation?

The directory welcomes organisations involved in housing retrofit, including those working on its wider effects.

This includes:

  • Installers and manufacturers.
  • Housing providers and local authorities.
  • Researchers and policy organisations.
  • Health services and community groups.

If your organisation contributes to how retrofit is delivered or understands its effects on people and homes, the directory team would like to hear about your work.

How do I add my organisation?

Complete the online registration form. It takes around 10 minutes.

The directory lists organisations rather than named individuals. As the information is intended for public use, do not include personal or sensitive information in your response.

Taking part is voluntary. The directory team reviews submissions and can edit entries to keep the information relevant and consistent.

Who developed the directory?

The directory was designed and is managed by Dr Imogen Bayfield and Professor Nigel Gilbert as part of INHABIT Hub at the University of Surrey, in collaboration with the National Retrofit Hub.

Alongside helping organisations connect, the directory supports research into the UK retrofit sector to inform policy and sector development.

About INHABIT Hub

INHABIT stands for Indoor HABItability during the Transition to Net Zero Housing Hub.

Its work focuses on making sure that improving homes to reduce carbon emissions also creates healthier places to live.

INHABIT Hub studies the effects of retrofit in real homes, including its effects on indoor air quality and damp and mould. It uses this evidence to develop practical advice for government and industry professionals.
