WHAT IS RETROFIT? CHARLIE’S WORK EXPERIENCE BLOG.

2 Jul, 2025

Retrofit sounds like a boring word, but now I think it’s actually kind of a big deal.

Before I came on work experience, I didn’t really know much about housing or retrofit. I just thought houses were houses. But then I got to learn about the National Retrofit Hub. They support people and businesses across the UK to improve existing homes by making them warmer, safer, healthier, and better for the environment. Their job is to make sure everyone works together, like builders, councils, government.

I found out that millions of people in the UK live in homes that are cold, damp or badly built, especially people in social housing. That can make people really ill, and even costs the NHS loads of money every year (£1.4 billion which seems unreal). The National Retrofit Hub wants to fix that by helping everyone involved find better, more joined-up ways to improve these homes.

They teamed up with a place called the Building Centre, which is like a giant exhibition and event space in London that shows off new ideas in architecture, design and how we build stuff. Together, they made an exhibition called Retrofit 25: What’s Stopping Us? It’s all about the problems we face when trying to make homes better and buildings, and what can be done about it.

It really made me think. I’d never realised how much planning and effort goes into the houses we live in. I also never thought about how lucky I am to live in a warm, safe home. It made me realise that not everyone has that and that there are people actually working to change it, in a fair and ethical way.

I got to walk around the exhibition, see all the different displays, and even got some free stuff. But honestly, the best part was learning something I never thought about before. Retrofit sounds like a boring word, but now I think it’s actually kind of a big deal.

Check out the virtual tour of Retrofit 25 – it’s pretty cool.
