How we work.

The retrofit challenge is too big, too connected and too important for any one organisation to solve alone.

That’s why the National Retrofit Hub brings people together across housing, local government, industry, academia, finance, community organisations and policy. We create the conditions for collaboration that leads to action.
Our role is to connect people around the issues slowing progress, help shape shared understanding, and support practical change across the retrofit system.

We focus on the barriers that affect delivery at scale. Things like skills, finance, standards, supply chains, engagement, procurement, health outcomes and data. The areas where progress often gets stuck between ambition and reality.

HOW DO WE MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

We are an independent network focused on enabling the delivery of retrofit at scale.

This means making it easier for everyone: communities, financiers, and professionals alike, to decarbonise homes and buildings. Achieving success requires collaboration across the entire sector to address strategic gaps and stimulate economic growth.

We achieve this by providing the leverage, guidance, and infrastructure needed to align industry efforts, co-create solutions, and deliver actionable recommendations in collaboration with government and stakeholders.

Our work is underpinned by three core pillars Convene, Evidence, and Action that define how we address barriers, align efforts, and enable progress across the sector.

We bring together the retrofit community to identify shared challenges, align priorities, and coordinate efforts that would not happen effectively in isolation.

We develop, test, and share evidence on what works in practice, helping improve decision-making, performance, and confidence across retrofit delivery.

We support practical action by translating insight into recommendations, tools, and initiatives that help improve delivery on the ground.

action.

Built around collaboration.

The NRH works through a combination of Working Groups, Cross-Cutting Themes, projects, events and wider engagement across the sector.

Each area brings together people with different perspectives and experience. That matters because retrofit decisions rarely sit in one place. Housing providers, installers, manufacturers, policymakers, community groups and researchers are often trying to solve different parts of the same problem.

We create space for those conversations to happen openly, constructively and with purpose.

Working Groups.

Our Working Groups focus on the core areas shaping retrofit delivery across the UK.

They bring together people working directly in these areas to explore barriers, share learning, identify gaps and help shape recommendations and resources that support better delivery.

The groups focus on:

Cross-Cutting Themes.

Some issues sit across the whole retrofit system.

Our Cross-Cutting Themes bring people together around topics that influence multiple parts of delivery, policy and practice. These themes help connect work happening across the NRH and encourage wider collaboration.

Themes currently include areas such as:

Projects and practical work.

Alongside our groups, we run projects focused on specific retrofit challenges and opportunities.

These projects bring together partners, evidence, workshops, research and lived experience to explore issues in more depth and develop practical outputs that support the sector.

That might include frameworks, recommendations, reports, tools, guidance, pilots or shared learning.

We are interested in work that helps retrofit happen more effectively in the real world.

Independent and action focused.

The National Retrofit Hub is a Community Interest Company focused on enabling equitable retrofit at scale across the UK.

We work collaboratively across the sector, bringing together different voices, experiences and areas of expertise. People will not always agree, but progress depends on stronger connections, better understanding and a willingness to work through difficult challenges together.

Everything we do is focused on helping create warmer, healthier, lower carbon homes and supporting the people and organisations working to deliver them.
